PaperCLIP is an on-line business and intellectual property law journal that accepts manuscripts of any length from students, professors, and legal professionals. It specializes in shorter, timely, practice oriented pieces, but also publishes longer articles.

The journal welcomes outside submissions. Unlike most law journals, however, PaperCLIP welcomes less than polished papers and even ideas for articles. Student staff members are happy to work in conjunction with legal practitioners to take an embryonic idea and turn it into a finished article.

Anyone interested in publishing with PaperCLIP should submit their idea, draft, or finished work electronically to the attention of the Editor-in-Chief at [email protected].

The Outdoors Club would like to invite TJ students, professors, staff, and alumni to its "unofficial" 5K run/walk on Saturday, April 26. This is NOT a race, but an opportunity to bring the TJSL community together before buckling down for finals.

The run/walk will be a loop route that will begin outside the front doors of TJ, continue towards the harbor, and end back at TJ.

The unofficial 5K will begin at 9am. Check-in will begin at 8:30am. Refreshments will be provided before and after the race.

Thank you for supporting the Thomas Jefferson School of Law Outdoors Club -- see you at the starting line!

  • Fazaga v. FBI: Surveillance and Secrets Under the Obama Administration

Thursday, November 8th at 11:30am — Thomas Jefferson School of Law · Room 325

Starting shortly after the 9/11 attacks, the federal government began an unprecedented expansion of its surveillance activity on United States citizens and residents. Civil rights groups have challenged that expansion through a variety of lawsuits. In response, the federal government has repeatedly asserted that those suits must be dismissed because allowing them to proceed would disclose “state secrets.” Federal courts have generally sided with the government in these cases, although several judges have vigorously dissented from those decisions, and in doing so have sharply criticized the government’s use of the state secrets doctrine.

Ahilan T. Arulanantham, nationally-renowned immigration expert and Deputy Legal Director of the ACLU of Southern California, will discuss the rise of the state secrets doctrine through the lens of Fazaga v. FBI. Fazaga is a challenge to the FBI’s policy of widespread surveillance on the Muslim communities in Southern California. Details of the FBI’s program were revealed when an FBI informant went public, describing a disturbing policy of dragnet FBI surveillance on the Muslim community that had gone on for years. Recent media coverage includes a feature on This American Life: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/471/the-convert

This event is organized by the Faculty Colloquium Committee and co-sponsored by the Center for Law & Social Justice and the Muslim Student Association.
