Elizabeth Grumet, Esq. graduated with honors in the major of Latin American & Latino Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2001. While at UCSC, Professor Grumet traveled to Ecuador to stay with the Cofan indigenous tribe & document their experiences with oil pollution. Elizabeth credits her brother Paul, who has Down’s Syndrome, with inspiring her in her life and her career. After college, Professor Grumet dedicated her life to expanding the opportunities of individuals with disabilities, working for Special Olympics Northern California for six years.
Professor Grumet graduated from Thomas Jefferson School of Law in 2009. While in law school, she served as co-President of the TJSL National Lawyers Guild, and co-president of the TJSL Environmental Law Society. While a student at TJSL, Professor Grumet won several legal writing awards, including the Jefferson Medal and the California Award for Excellence in legal writing. She also won the American Bar Association’s 2008 Law Student Programs Writing Competition for her extended research paper on the near-decimation of indigenous tribes in Ecuador by oil pollution. During law school, she served as a law clerk at Disability Rights California, and also served as a law clerk on a legal team representing railroad union workers in labor disputes.
After graduating from law school, Professor Grumet gained tremendous complex litigation experience, representing victims of San Diego wildfires in personal injury, business, and property losses, helping win millions of dollars in settlements against San Diego Gas & Electric.
Prior to starting The Grumet Gonzalez Law Firm, Professor Grumet worked as a staff attorney at Disability Rights California, representing individuals with disabilities in discrimination cases. She also gained invaluable experience co-counseling on numerous civil rights cases, representing protesters wrongfully arrested while exercising their First Amendment rights. As managing attorney of the Grumet Gonzalez Law Firm, Professor Grumet primarily represents workers in discrimination and whistleblower cases, and students with disabilities who have faced discrimination in higher education.
Professor Grumet graduated from the Trial Lawyers College in October 2019 and serves as her class president. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Trial Lawyers College Alumni Association.
Professor Grumet is passionate about public service. She has served as a Red Cross Disaster Action volunteer and Shelter Operations volunteer for over fifteen-years, assisting families during large-scale and residential fires. Elizabeth has served as a Make-A-Wish wish granter for over fifteen-years and was honored to receive the 2015 Make-A-Wish San Diego Wish Granter of the Year Award. Elizabeth has also won several awards for her humanitarian work, including the Charles T. Bumer Civil Libertarian Book Award (through TJSL) and the San Andreas Regional Center's Service Above Self Award.
