Professor Marjorie Cohn will be a panelist at The Global Crisis Leadership Forum on October 28 at Indiana University.
The panel discussion in which she will participate is titled: The Legality and Wisdom of Armed Intervention in Libya.
"The justification for NATO's invasion of Libya was to protect civilians,” says Professor Cohn of her upcoming presentation. “ Yet, untold numbers of civilians have been killed by NATO bombs and opposition forces are engaging in the ethnic cleansing of black Libyans using the excuse that they are foreign mercenaries who fought for Qaddafi. The concept of ‘Responsibility to Protect’ was used describe the rationale for the NATO invasion. But this is not a norm of international law and there is a danger it will be utilized for political, rather than humanitarian, reasons, and only by the strong powers. I look forward to this provocative panel discussion."
